Multifoil insulation — when 40mm beats 200mm
More than 20 layers of reflective foil and foam, 40mm or 80mm thick depending on where it's going. It outperforms 200mm of mineral wool because it reflects radiant heat back into the room rather than just slowing it down. In the right wall it transforms the home. In the wrong wall it traps moisture. The U-value calculation comes before the install, every time.

About this service
Multifoil, designed properly.
Multifoil is what we recommend on most homes we survey. It is a reflective laminate — more than 20 layers of foil and engineered foam, 40mm or 80mm thick depending on the application — that outperforms 200mm of mineral wool. It does so by reflecting radiant heat back into the room rather than just slowing it down. About two-thirds of the heat lost through a typical UK ceiling or roof line is radiant; mineral wool catches very little of it, multifoil catches almost all of it. The fact that it does this in 40mm rather than 200mm is the reason it works where old-school insulation cannot — converted lofts with no head room, internal walls where you cannot lose floor space, solid-wall homes whose owners do not want to lose a wing of the living room to insulation. We fit it under rafters, behind dot-and-dab on cold external walls, and — most powerfully — externally on solid-walled homes, where 80mm of multifoil wraps the whole house and a waterproof cladding panel goes on top. The cladding finishes the system and protects the foil. It's the strongest fabric upgrade we fit, and unlike spray foam it leaves the roof timbers visible and the home mortgageable. PAS 2030-accredited install. 50-year product warranty on the foil. 10-year warranty on the cladding system. Both insurer-backed.
What independent experts say
Public Guidance · OMG-021
Centre for Sustainable Energy
In almost all cases, installing spray foam insulation carries considerable risks.
What you get
- Up to 170mm thinner than equivalent mineral wool build-ups — preserves head height in conversions and bungalows
- Reflects greater than 95% of radiant heat back into the room (radiant heat is roughly 60–70% of total loss through a pitched roof)
- BBA-certified systems with named certificate numbers on every quote — no generic claims, no marketing-grade U-values
- Built-in vapour-control membrane — eliminates the separate VCL most installers forget on a cold-roof retrofit
- Lambda values published in independent test data — typically 0.034–0.038 W/mK on the certified products we install
- 50-year product guarantee from the manufacturer, 5-year installation guarantee from OMEGA on top
- Air-gap-aware fitting protocol — we measure and verify the manufacturer-required air gaps before plasterboarding (the failure mode that sinks 80% of bad multifoil installs)

How it works
How it works, step by step.
01
Free home survey (45 minutes)
Our surveyor measures rafter depth, ventilation paths, the existing insulation thickness, and the room-in-roof build-up — looking specifically for the air gap and ventilation conditions multifoil needs to perform. Thermal imaging on request, no extra cost. If multifoil is wrong for your home, you will hear it on the day.
02
Layered specification (in writing, on the quote)
We design the build-up layer by layer: rafter, ventilation gap, multifoil product (named, with BBA certificate number), counter-batten depth, plasterboard. Every layer appears on your quote. The U-value calculation appears on your quote. The air-gap dimensions appear on your quote.
03
Installation (1–3 days typical, lead installer named on day one)
PAS2030-accredited team of two — never subcontracted, lead installer is your single point of contact. Day one: foil layered between rafters with the correct tensioned air gaps above and below, overlaps taped to manufacturer specification. Day two (where applicable): counter-battens fixed at the depth our quote specifies, plasterboard up. We measure each air gap before any board goes on. Most loft-only jobs are done in a single visit, before lunch.
04
Certification, guarantees, EPC lodged
TrustMark certificate, 50-year product guarantee from the manufacturer, 5-year workmanship guarantee from OMEGA, and an updated EPC lodged within 30 days. The thermal imaging report (if you wanted one at survey) gets revisited six months in to verify performance — at no extra cost.

The OMEGA flagship pairing
Wrap your home in multifoil. Power it with solar. The two upgrades that change every other number on your bill.
A well-insulated home uses less electricity. A solar-powered home generates its own. Combine the two and the same kWh of solar generation covers a much bigger share of your annual demand. Payback drops faster than either upgrade pays for itself alone.

Why pairing wins
- Lower thermal demand from multifoil means a smaller, cheaper solar array can cover a larger share of your year-round electricity use.
- A wrapped + powered home is the OMEGA flagship combination — every external surface working for you, every kWh self-generated where possible.
- Single survey, single install schedule, ECO4 stacking on multifoil + Smart Export Guarantee on solar — paperwork handled end-to-end.
The OMEGA Multi-Foil Promise
A 35% heat-loss reduction within 30 days — falsifiable, refundable, written in.
Multifoil reflects radiant heat that conventional fibre absorbs and slowly leaks. Pre-install thermal scan, post-install thermal scan, BBA-certified product, PAS2030 install. We promise a minimum 35% measured heat-loss cut across the treated surfaces.
If we miss
If the year-one measured drop is under 35%, we add additional layers or remediate at zero cost. If you still aren't comfortable, we refund the labour element of the original install.
Honest about who this isn't for
This isn't the right tool for solid-floor insulation (we'd use rigid PIR) or for unventilated cold roofs (we'd fix the ventilation first). We'll tell you on the survey.

Grants and funding
The grants you can get.
Eligibility changes often, the schemes don’t reward homeowners who fill the forms in themselves, and the paperwork is genuinely tedious. So we file it for you.
We handle the paperwork end-to-end
- ECO4 + GBIS — insulation, paid direct to us
- BUS — up to £7,500 off heat pumps
- SEG — export tariff registration
- OZEV / EVHS — EV charger grants
You sign once. We submit, evidence, and chase. The grant comes off your final invoice — nothing for you to claim back.
ECO4 funding — room-in-roof multifoil is a named eligible measure for benefit-led households
ECO4 LA Flex — local-authority extension for households below the income threshold without a benefit
Home Upgrade Grant 2 — off-gas-grid properties with shallow rafters where bulk insulation cannot be specified
Common questions
Common questions, answered honestly.
Does multifoil insulation actually work, or is it a marketing gimmick?
Both have been true at different times in the product's history, and the honest answer matters. The early multifoil products in the late 1990s and early 2000s did claim U-values they could not deliver in independent testing — the trade is right to remember that. The BBA-certification regime tightened from around 2010 onwards and the certified products on the market today have published, independently-tested lambda values that are checkable against the cert number. We only fit BBA-certified systems. The other reason multifoil under-performs in the field is bad installation: the reflective mechanism only works with the manufacturer-specified air gap above and below the foil, and a lot of trade installers skip that step because they cannot see the difference once the plasterboard is up. We measure and sign off the air gap before any board goes on. If yours is a job we cannot do that on, we will not fit multifoil at all and we will explain why on the survey.
How does multifoil compare to PIR rigid board?
Different products for different jobs. PIR rigid board (Celotex, Kingspan, EcoTherm) wins where you have full cavity depth available — between rafters in a new build, on a flat-roof warm-roof build-up over the deck, internal wall insulation on a solid wall. Multifoil wins where head-height or build-up depth are the binding constraint — room-in-roof, dormer ceilings, bungalow eaves, internal stud walls that need to keep their service void. We use both, often on the same job. The decision is on the survey, in writing, before you sign anything.
How does multifoil compare to mineral wool?
Mineral wool (Knauf Earthwool, Rockwool, Isover) is the cheapest insulation per kWh saved when you have the depth for it — typically 270mm in a ventilated loft. The trade installs it because it is forgiving, well-understood, and the product cost per square metre is low. It is not the answer when you need a thinner build-up to preserve usable space. A 30–40mm multifoil and a 270mm Earthwool quilt deliver similar U-values; the choice between them is whether you can afford to lose 270mm of head room.
What is the air gap rule, and why does every installer mention it?
Multifoil reflects radiant heat: infrared energy travelling as waves rather than through contact. That mechanism needs a continuous air space (typically 25mm) above and below the foil layer for the reflected energy to return to the warm side without being conducted straight through the next material. Squash the air gap by stapling the foil flush to plasterboard, and the radiant-reflection mechanism becomes a conduction path: the foil now performs like a thin layer of plastic, which is to say barely at all. Every BBA certificate names the required air gap; every reputable installer measures and signs off the gap before plasterboarding. We do.
Is multifoil suitable for a cold-roof flat extension?
Yes, but ventilation is critical and the build-up has to be designed by someone who has done it before. The standard solution we fit is a BBA-certified warm-roof build-up where joist depth is too shallow for 270mm of bulk insulation — most commonly on dormers and rear extensions. Ventilation gaps above the foil are set to the manufacturer's spec, the ridge and eaves details are continuous, and the job is signed off by a PAS2035 retrofit designer if it is grant-funded. We do not fit multifoil into a cold-roof build-up where the ventilation pathway is broken — the trapped moisture risk is real, and the right answer there is a different product.
Why do some installers refuse to fit multifoil at all?
Two reasons, both honest. First, the early-2000s history we mentioned above — a generation of installers got burned by products that did not perform and they have not revisited the certified market since. Second, the labour profile is different from rolling a quilt: it takes longer, the spec is more detailed, the air-gap discipline is the difference between a great install and a bad one, and a lot of trade firms would rather quote the job they can do quickly. We fit it because for the cases above (room-in-roof, bungalow eaves, dormer ceilings) it is the only honest answer, and because we have built the install protocol around the things that go wrong.
Does multifoil qualify for ECO4 or other funding?
Yes. Room-in-roof multifoil upgrades are a named eligible measure under ECO4 for households on a qualifying benefit, and under ECO4 LA Flex for lower-income households below the £31,000 threshold who are not on a benefit. Eligibility depends on EPC band (D–G), council-tax band (LA Flex), and household composition. We check both routes on the same survey visit and where the scheme covers it the install is free; where the measure is part-funded we quote a transparent top-up price before any work starts. Not every multifoil job is grant-funded — a private retrofit on a 1990s loft conversion in a band-E council-tax property typically pays self-funded — and we will tell you which case applies on the survey.
Do I need to move out of the house during installation?
No. Multifoil installs happen room by room from inside, usually finishing each room within a day. We cover floors and furniture, take all waste out at the end of every day, and leave the space dust-vacuumed. The room is sleepable that night. A typical room-in-roof job is 1–2 working days; a multi-room dormer retrofit can run to 3 days.
