If the floor is cold under bare feet and the room never feels warm enough, your floor is leaking heat. Suspended timber floors get insulation between the joists; solid floors get a PIR board on top. Most of the cost goes back into the bill in two to four years.

About this service
Underfloor insulation, designed properly.
If your downstairs floor feels icy in winter and there's a draught chasing your ankles whenever you sit on the sofa, your suspended timber floor is almost certainly under-insulated — most pre-1970s homes either have nothing under the boards or a slumped, rodent-chewed layer that stopped working decades ago. We insulate from below using tensioned mineral wool or rigid PIR board, improve sub-floor ventilation at the same time so we don't trade cold for damp, and leave the floor reading as warm underfoot as a modern new-build. For solid concrete floors, we fit an overlay PIR system during a room refurb that adds about 25mm to the floor build-up but makes a real difference to ground-floor comfort. Both routes are PAS2030-accredited and grant-eligible where the wider package qualifies.

Common questions
Common questions, answered honestly.
Do I need to move out or lift all my floors?
No. On a suspended timber floor we install from below wherever the void is accessible. No disruption to the finished floor at all. Where the void is too shallow, we lift one board per joist bay, install from above, and re-fix.
Will insulation cause rot in the timber?
Only if ventilation is blocked. Our scope always includes checking and, where needed, uprating the sub-floor airbricks. We use breathable mineral-wool systems and guarantee against condensation damage for 5 years.
Is it worth it on its own, or only bundled?
On its own, payback is around 5–8 years — decent but not spectacular. Bundled with loft + wall insulation on an ECO4 package it is effectively free and lifts comfort dramatically. Most of our underfloor jobs are funded bundles.
What about solid concrete floors?
Solid floors can only be insulated during a renovation — we overlay 25mm PIR board plus a new wear surface. It adds 25mm to finished floor height, so door jambs and skirting usually need to be refitted. We flag that before you commit.
