Suspended timber floors are the norm in pre-1970s houses, and most of them have either no insulation at all or a thin, slumped layer that has been chewed through by rodents. The symptoms are always the same: cold feet on winter mornings, a whistle of draught at the skirting, and a heating bill that feels wrong for the house. Our teams insulate from below using tensioned mineral wool or rigid PIR board, uprating the sub-floor ventilation at the same time so the timbers stay dry. For solid concrete floors we fit an overlay PIR system during a room refurb. Clean, fast, and genuinely felt underfoot within the week.

Do I need to lift all my floors or move out?

No — on a suspended timber floor we install from below wherever the void is accessible, and your finished floor never gets touched. Where the void is too shallow for a person, we lift one board per joist bay, install from above and re-fix. Either way you stay in the house throughout.

Will insulation cause rot in the timbers?

Only if ventilation is blocked — which is why every OMEGA scope includes checking the sub-floor airbricks and uprating them where needed. We use breathable mineral-wool systems that let the timbers sit in equilibrium with the air, and we guarantee against condensation damage for five years. The timbers end up drier, not damper.

Is it worth doing on its own, or only as part of a bundle?

On its own, payback is around 5–8 years — decent but not spectacular. Bundled with loft and wall insulation under ECO4 or GBIS it's often effectively free, and the comfort lift is out of proportion to the cost. Most of our underfloor jobs come in as funded bundles for exactly that reason.

What about solid concrete floors?

Solid floors can really only be insulated during a renovation — we overlay 25mm PIR board plus a new wear surface. It does add 25mm to the finished floor height, so door bottoms and sometimes skirting boards need adjusting. We flag all that before you commit so nothing is a surprise on install day.
