If you've been googling solar panel prices and coming back with wildly different numbers, here is the reason. Solar pricing moved fast in 2025 — module costs fell, inverters got smarter, and the 0% VAT rule was extended to March 2027. A proper 2026 quote looks very different to the numbers you might have seen two summers ago. Below is what a domestic install actually costs right now in the East of England, what drives the number up or down, and what you should reasonably expect to earn back.
Headline 2026 solar panel prices for UK homes
Every price below is fully fitted, MCS-certified, and includes the Smart Export Guarantee application lodged in your name. 0% VAT is applied (the rule was extended until 31 March 2027). Figures reflect OMEGA survey rates across Essex, Suffolk, Kent and Cambridgeshire in Q2 2026 — real quotes, not headline 'from' prices.
| System size | Panels (approx.) | Annual generation | Typical fitted cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.4 kWp | 8 × 425W | ~3,100 kWh | £5,200–£6,200 |
| 4.25 kWp | 10 × 425W | ~3,900 kWh | £6,400–£7,600 |
| 5.95 kWp | 14 × 425W | ~5,500 kWh | £8,200–£9,800 |
| 8.0 kWp (two strings) | 18–20 × 425W | ~7,400 kWh | £10,500–£12,900 |
Planning to add a battery? Around £2,800 extra for a 5 kWh unit, £4,400 for 10 kWh — both fully fitted, not headline numbers. Every price includes the scaffolding, DNO notification, and a 25-year performance warranty on the panels. You will not see hidden extras on your final invoice.
What actually drives your solar quote up or down
- Roof pitch and material. Standard concrete tile or slate is priced as above. Clay pantile, cedar shingle or a very low pitch adds 8–15%.
- String count. A roof with two orientations (east + west) needs two strings and MPPTs, which adds £200–£400 to the inverter.
- Optimisers or microinverters. Partial shading or chimney shadow calls for per-panel optimisers — roughly £80 per panel. For fully unshaded roofs, skip them.
- Scaffolding access. If the scaffold has to go on a neighbour's drive, an access permit may add £100–£250.
- Battery and backup. Battery-ready hybrid inverters cost £300–£500 more than PV-only inverters, but save that back if you add storage later.
Is a solar battery worth the extra in 2026?
For most solar-only households, the answer has tipped from 'maybe' to 'yes' in the last couple of years — but it is a closer call than the battery salespeople will admit. Here is the arithmetic, honestly.
- Without a battery, you self-consume 30–40% of what your panels generate. The rest exports to the grid at the Smart Export Guarantee rate, which runs 6p–16p per kWh depending on your supplier.
- With a 5 kWh battery, self-consumption jumps to 65–80%. On a 4.25 kWp system, that's roughly an extra £230 a year of import you no longer have to pay for.
- Pair the battery with Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus and you also charge it overnight at 7p, running the whole home through peak-rate hours at near zero. That's another £120–£240 a year on top.
Solar panel payback in 2026 — what the maths says
On a typical 4.25 kWp install, the annual benefit (self-consumption plus export plus battery load-shifting) currently runs £1,050–£1,350 depending on tariff and household use. Against a £6,400–£7,600 fitted cost, that's a 5.5–7.5 year payback — before you factor in any future inflation on electricity. Add a battery and payback stretches to 7–9 years, but lifetime saving comfortably clears £30,000 over the 25-year warranty.
What the 0% VAT rule covers on solar
Until 31 March 2027, solar PV, batteries (including retrofit-only battery installs) and heat pumps sit at 0% VAT when supplied and fitted by a VAT-registered installer. You don't need to claim anything — the installer zero-rates the invoice automatically. If a quote arrives with VAT on the panels, it's worth asking why, because something is off.
How OMEGA quotes solar — no sales pressure, fixed numbers
- Remote survey. Send three photos of your roof plus your postcode — we come back with a fixed ±5% quote within 48 hours, no home visit required at this stage.
- On-site confirmation. Free 45-minute visit with a shading scan using a Solmetric-equivalent tool so we know exactly what the roof will generate.
- MCS design pack. Panel layout, string diagram, and the DNO G98/G99 notification all handled by us — you never see a form.
- Install. 1–2 days on a domestic roof; scaffold goes up the day before so there are no surprises.
- Handover. App paired, Smart Export Guarantee application submitted in your name, and a written walk-through of how to monitor your generation.
