Smart Export Guarantee. What you actually get paid for solar.
The Smart Export Guarantee is the UK scheme that requires licensed energy suppliers to pay solar owners for any electricity they send back to the grid. It is not a one-off grant — it is an ongoing tariff, and the rate you get depends on which supplier you sign up with.
3p–15p per kWh exported

Eligibility
Who this covers
Eligibility rules shift as schemes evolve. Treat this as a starting guide — the on-site survey is the only way to confirm for certain.
- Solar PV system up to 5MW capacity (domestic systems typically 3–4kW)
- Installation by an MCS-certified installer (OMEGA is MCS certified)
- Smart meter or export meter installed
- System must be registered with your chosen SEG licensee
- Available to homeowners, landlords, and businesses
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) ensures that homeowners with solar panels are paid for surplus electricity they export to the national grid. It is a legal requirement for large energy suppliers to offer SEG tariffs.
As MCS-certified solar installers, every OMEGA solar installation automatically qualifies for SEG registration. We help you choose the best tariff and handle the paperwork.
Common questions
SEG — Smart Export Guarantee — answered honestly.
How much can I earn from the Smart Export Guarantee?
A typical 4kW domestic system exports around 1,500–2,500 kWh per year. At current rates of 3p–15p per kWh, annual earnings range from £45 to £375 depending on your tariff and usage patterns.
Which energy supplier offers the best SEG rate?
SEG rates change frequently. At the time of installation, we will advise you on the best available tariff. Some suppliers offer fixed rates while others offer variable or time-of-use rates.
Can I combine SEG with battery storage?
Absolutely. A battery lets you store surplus energy for evening use, then export whatever remains. This maximises both your self-consumption savings and your SEG income.
Do I need to be with a specific energy supplier?
No. You can register for SEG with any licensed supplier — you do not need to switch your electricity supply. Choose whichever supplier offers the best export tariff.
Is SEG the same as the old Feed-in Tariff?
SEG replaced the Feed-in Tariff in 2020. While FiT paid for all generation plus export, SEG pays only for exported electricity. However, combined with self-consumption savings, solar remains highly financially attractive.
