BUS · Grants & funding

Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Up to £7,500 off a heat pump.

BUS is the main UK grant for switching from a fossil-fuel boiler to a heat pump. The £7,500 figure is paid as a discount against the install cost — not as cash to the homeowner. Most boiler-replacement homes qualify.

Eligibility

Who this covers

Eligibility rules shift as schemes evolve. Treat this as a starting guide — the on-site survey is the only way to confirm for certain.

  • Own your property (including buy-to-let landlords)
  • Replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system (gas, oil, LPG, electric)
  • Property must have a valid EPC with no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations
  • Property must not be a new build
  • Must use an MCS-certified installer (OMEGA is MCS certified)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the UK's primary funding mechanism for heat pump adoption. It provides a £7,500 upfront discount on air source heat pump installations, making the switch from gas or oil heating significantly more affordable.

OMEGA is MCS certified — the mandatory accreditation required to access BUS vouchers for our customers. We handle the entire Ofgem application process.

How the £7,500 Works

The BUS voucher is not a loan or a rebate. It is a direct discount applied to your installation cost. You never see the £7,500 — it goes directly from Ofgem to us after your installation is complete. You only pay the net balance.

Why Heat Pumps Make Sense Now

With gas prices at historic highs and the gas boiler ban approaching in 2035, switching to a heat pump now locks in lower running costs and future-proofs your home. Combined with proper insulation, a heat pump can reduce your heating bills by 30–50% compared to an ageing gas boiler.

Every heat pump we install is designed specifically for your property. We size the system correctly, assess heat loss, and ensure your home will be comfortable year-round — not just on paper.

Common questions

BUS — Boiler Upgrade Scheme — answered honestly.

  • How much does a heat pump cost after the BUS grant?

A typical air source heat pump installation costs £10,000–£14,000 before the grant. After the £7,500 BUS voucher, most homeowners pay between £2,500 and £6,500 depending on system size and property requirements.

  • Can I combine BUS with other grants or funding?

The BUS cannot be combined with ECO4 for the same measure. However, you can use ECO4 or GBIS for insulation improvements and BUS for the heat pump — maximising your overall savings.

  • Do I need to insulate my home before getting a heat pump?

Your EPC must not have outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. If it does, we can install the insulation first (often free under ECO4 or GBIS) before applying for BUS.

  • How long does the BUS application take?

We submit the application to Ofgem on your behalf. Approval typically takes 3–5 working days. The voucher is then valid for 3 months, giving ample time to schedule installation.

  • Will a heat pump work with my existing radiators?

In many cases, yes. Modern heat pumps operate efficiently with existing radiators. Our survey will confirm whether any radiator upgrades are needed — and if so, we include them in the quote.
